Loving this today. Very retro, very weird and makes me laugh each time I glance at it. My daughter thought she was bad ass, but of course is now having costume remorse and wants to be a witch. I am holding my own on this and refusing to buy another costume. She found her old Dorothy costume and might go as that. I think waitress with attitude is much more original and easier for her to pull off! Lars her is the amputee cop- not sure where his arm went but love it still. Happy Haloween!

7th Birthday

It will be important to remember that we had a completely inside party this year as it was 108 degrees on the day of your party. Last week on your actual birthday it decided to rain (again- just like last year) but we did get in an hour and half or swimming.

Today we decided to stay cool and see the movie Rio- it was adorable! Everyone got a bag of candy to munch on during the movie. Then it was off to Pizza Ranch for buffet and rainbow cake! This was the second time I have made it and it was a bright and pretty surprise!

Happy birthday to my growing and beautiful daughter. I am sad to see how you are no longer the little girl but you are becoming strong and independent and devkloping your own ideas and interests. I can't wait to see who you grow up to be. You told everyone at you church group that when you grew up you, "want to have fun and be an artist!" I find your enthusiasm for joy contagious- I hope to never see this disappear! Love you!

What can I say, great town and even better people!

We miss these guys dearly and Iowa City is not the same without them. We loved getting to see their new life and it was a sad departure. Seems real now somehow and I can't keep thinking that they will be back. I am glad to have these people in my life and feel fortunate that they were such an important (shall I say - integral) part of my young childrens' lives.

Jeff, Nora, Alice, Greta and little Hazel- your footprints left behind in Iowa are huge and will be difficult to fill. However you are loved and will always be a part of our family. You are welcome in our home anytime!

Off to Camp

Ella has been kept very busy by her mother at not one but two girl scout camps. One was easy (day camp) close to home- Hickory Hill. The second was three days and 2 over nights about one hour away at Camp Conestoga. I was excited as was Ella.

I have not developed her pictures yet (can't wait!) But I picked her up around 3:30, drove home & arrived at 4:30. she laid down and hugged daddy then promptly went to bed with no supper at 5:30. I write this at 10:00 and she is still out cold. I can't even get her shorts off her, she's sleeping so hard.

Summer Garage Sales Find

So, I have not been as diligent with garage sales as I was last summer. I was very lazy last Friday and did not even check Craigslist or the PC to see if there were any Friday garage sales. Well, I definietly missed the mother load. Some lady had size 7-8-9 all boutique and Boden name brand stuff. Exactly my kind of sale. Her prices were also too good to be true. My friend Heather made a killing!! I did get a few things the following day and I sent another friend to pick up the rest of the boutique stuff.

Here is what I did get. Did I mention I spent a whopping $12 on all of it! LOVE garage sales!

So a wedding is coming! We are so excited to welcome Hannah into our family. The kids will be a part of this day and they were showing off their new duds. It was fun to see Lars yuck it up for the camera. Ella wants to wear her shoes, dress and headband to school asap! I love how they look. We are working on talking Lars into the Sperry boat shoes rather than the Jack Purcell tennis shoes, but we wil see. After looking at these pics some more, I like the white tennies too.

He really looks so sad, but don't let it fool you. He was just tired.

So the kids started Kixx, a fun learn soccer program withthe Alliance. The kids were led by Paul who has a very British accent and remarkably remembered everyones names! Lars was exhausted and sat down several times during play- he later blamed it on the fact that he did not have the "fast" shoes. Daddy will have to help take care of his shoe need. I noticed Ella being very observant and really watching. Now if my kids can both learn to chase that ball and work with others is will be a soccer miracle! I am sure there will be more posts to come in soccer land!

Had to share my husband's great theme idea for Lars' bday party. I can't remember the last party we had for him, possible age 2? Poor guy!
It should be fun though, we will be swimming and playing "Minute to Win It" games. I am excited to see how he and his buddies like it. Now to figure out how many get to go. I was trying to keep it small, then at the dinner table last night, he told Bret, "I shoudl be able to invite how many I am" - meaning if I am 5 I get to invite 5. Bret thought that seemed pretty logical. I laughed as I was trying to kep it small and manageable. That may be out the winow! HA

Upcycle- St. Patty's Day

I finally made an upcycle! I have been wanting to for some time- but after being inspired by all the ones I see on line, I told myself to kick it and get one done.

I thought St. Patty's Day was doable and I found 3 great shirts at Goodwill to recycle into my DD dress. I used my Wendy as my guide(for the line) as I love the fit of it.

I do not have it hemmed yet as I need to try it on her to check length. Likely I will just serge the hem as well. It did go together very quickly- an hour?ish? But the cutting and assembling took a bit longer than that.

I can't wait to get a pic of DD in it!

New carts. Kinda plastic-y feeling. Not sure if they will last.

So they are remodeling my Target. I wish they would have consulted with me first. I am completely discombobulated when I go in now. Don't get me wrong, I want to have food at my Target. It will be adding a pharmacy and smallish food section- we will be a Mini Super Target. What made me laugh most was watching the employees expressions as they were discovering all the changes that happened overnight. It really is like entering a new store everytime I go. But there were some great deals!!! See below. Let's see how long before I get a Red card. I have a feeling it won't be long! This post could also be called, I went in for paper towels and I came out with..... Sadly this is a fairly common story my friends. LOL!

Patagonia Find

It needed a good soak because it was very dirty! I should have taken a picture of the soaking water. I was really grossed out and it takes a lot for me to get grossed out. Then I washed it up and it is a great coat~the only question is, is it a girls or a boys? Ella is not thrilled by it. She likes fuzzy and warm. I think it is VERY warm- but this is a deceiving coat in that category since it is a poly fill.

I know it is an older line, but I like it. I am still a sucker for orange unless it starts to look like pennetentiary orange- but this does not. (I hope!) I know it will be great for Lars when he fits into it. It is a bit large on Ella right now- so perhaps she'll like it for next season. Not too shappy for under $20 from Second Act. I found it on sale there, believe it or not! I figure I whould be able to resell it for 20 or more with no problems!

I found this beauty at Stuff Etc and about died! It i smy favorite brand~ Desigual~ very expensive and very hard to find. It almost always sells out of the boutiques. It is a size 6-7-8 and generous in the arms. Worn with "ae" striped purple leggings in an xs. Yes she can wear juniors now! So not ready for this move.

Had to add a shot of the tongue. It makes an appearance when he is concentrating. As in concentrating on Pac-Man. How I love this guy!

Preparing for the Holidays

Remembering this goody...

But this year I need to get a move on! I was fortunate enough to have a great friend volunteer to some over to my house with her fantabulous Canon SLR camera and take pitcures of the kiddos, who were somewhat cooperative in the back yard. We got some great shots! Now it is time to make the holiday card.

I don't understand why everyone doesn't do it this way. It is so easy. So cute. So much fun. I love the options. I love to play around with the settings! To me this is the modern 21st century Hallmark shopping. Don't get me wrong, I love going to the card store and browsing like I used to. One of my first jobs was in a Hallmark store. That wil always hold a special spot for me in my heart. But this is so much fun to do. And after you receive them, it is so neat to have a personalized card to share with your family! so now I just need to narrow down my choices....

I have to say on Shutterfly I am very impressed with the variety of choices and low prices! I think these cards look much more expensive than what they actually are!

What a Week

The week before school begins is usually filled with prepping my classroom and running my last minute errands and trying to entertain the children with the last lazy days of swimming and playing outside.

This is a summer where that week was not meant to be. I had a day the week before where my mother in law commented on how big Lars' tonsils were. I guess I had noticed but did not think of it as they always have been a little on the large side. I was just at the pediatrician's office and missed my chance at a quick looksie, so I called and made another appointment to see if they were bigger than they should be. Dr. Hackbarth took one look and promptly referred me to go see the ENT because he thought they likely needed to come out.

Now, here is the backstory. Bret, my husband, also had Dr. Hackbarth when he was a kid. He had enlarged tonsils. But he was told they don't take them out anymore...circa 1975. He still maintains that he should have had them out and it is all Dr. Hackbarth's fault. So when I called Bret and told him about the referral he was a little stunned.

Then I called the ENT and we were able to get in Monday afternoon. We took my happy little guy to go see Dr. Capper, the nicest and most engaging ENT I have met yet. Lars loves him and really is enchanted with his calm and funny manner! He told me that they rank tonsils size on a scale of 1-4. Four typically is the worst and that is when the recommend removal. Lars was a 4. He told me that his breathing, voice quality and eating will all be much improved with the surgery. In his practice he told me that he typically does T & A surgery (My 12 year old brain laughed inside when he called it T & A!) on Tuesdays.

Now, for me this is my last week- I go back to work on Friday. Kids come at CCA on Wednesday, my kids go to school on Thursday. So in my head I was trying to figure how many days off my husband and I would have to take. Then I was trying to figure out how in the world I would ever be able to get myself organized since I have so much on my plate right now- with school beginning. Oh and in case you don't know I plan on teaching a class at Kirkwood Tuesday and Thursday nights. So- a surgery later would not be better than sooner.

So I scheduled the surgery for the next day. This took most of the rest of my afternoon. As I meet with scheduling and then met with the surgical unit up from the ENT office. Did you know a tonsilectomy can now be outpatient? I thought we would be going to Mercy, but with the new surgical unit, we were in at 6:30 AM (yes! This is the earliest I have gotten up in a while!) but we were home before noon.

The surgery went great! He was a happy little boy skipping off with the anesthethologist before surgery. I worried that he would never trust me again. He did well in surgery and the doctor commented that they removed a lot of tissue. He was amazed that Lars was able to swallow solid foods without complications. I did remind him that Lars seemed to gag and choke on his food all the time, but we attributed it to him eating too much or too fast.

The doctor also noted an immediate difference in the quality of his breathing, pre and post operation. Lars has always been a loud and somewhat restless sleeper. He does sleep pretty sound though and he always sleeps through the night. Just in strange positions. He props himself up, thrashes his arms around etc. all to find a comfortable position. He also is a mouth breather- mouth wide open. It is loud and noisy. I have been joking about his snoring and breathing for a while but I was alerted that some of the breathing patterns resemble apnia and that is not normal for a 4 year old. It also means that he is not as rested as he could be- which may account for restlessness, inability to listen, and other behaviors I sometimes see. When we came home, I really could not get over how quiet his sleeping was. I kept checking on him throughout the night- he was really sleeping soundly. It is amazing! His appetite is not huge but he is managing great. Last night the menu was ice cream, popsicles and pudding. I got him to have some Cream of Wheat this morning too!

I really thought this would be enough for our fmaily to deal with this week. I called Brenda and she volunteered to take Ella for a couple of days, so I can focus on Lars' getting better. When the docs brought Lars out of recovery, the informed me that he had lice. I was so happy he made it okay but this news was just so NOT what I wanted to hear. Sure enough I saw several little nits on his head. I sighed and decided to focus on his recovery and deal with this mess later. I guess after some thinking, I am glad we caught this now rather than him gettign sent home on the first day of school! I only found a dozen or so nits in his hair. I think the docs found a bug though. It took me more than an hour to go through mine and lets just say, I am looking forward to a haircut soon! I spent the entire day cleaning and washing all our linens and bagging up toys that need to be in quarantine for a while. Not exactly how I wanted to spend my day or week!

I found this photographer and all I can think is how wonderful her pictures are. The pictures are the kids faces- simple and beautifully done. I love the depth and how each of the kids personality is captured so well. I wonder where/ who I could go to in my area to get pictures like hers. Any recommendations? I have not done pictures with the kids since last year and family pictures have been a good 2 years. I need to do this, possibly for the holidays. I love fall, so I would like to find some one to do fall pictures for our family. I have a personal family photographer- Jess. She has a super fancy camera and we may try a summer photo shoot at Kent Park before school starts. If it works perhaps we will do a fall session as well!

Back to School Supplies

This bag was free! I am not kidding! Staples is running a free backpack rebate. Buy a bag this week, send away for a Staples card in the amount you pay for the backpack. I got this one for Ella for $25. Oh- if you need paper, stock up on these packs for one cent. Yes 1 cent!

This may complete my back to school shopping. I do think most everything I purchased was on sale and I did it in two or three trips over a few weeks. Watch the sales circulars or check them online and always be on the lookout for in store specials. Target really rocked the specials this year.

I also happen to LOVE LOVE LOVE back to school shopping. Perhaps a bit too much. So having a list and sticking to it is of vital necessity for me. Otherwise I end up taking tons of stuff to my classroom and giving it away to the kids. I do not need to do this and I am showing good constraint this summer! (so far....)

Out With the Old in with the New

Recently Brenda, my MIL, took the kids for a day and I cleaned and reorganized their rooms. It was wonderful watching their faces when they came home as they ohhed and ahhed in regards to the clean rooms and how they wer changed around. Lars seems to love his and Ella thinks it is just great, but wonders why I did not change it around more. Well, because you stress out with too much change baby girl. I know you. But apparently she wanted more. Too funny!

I was thinking it was time and they will take good care of it all. This morning though I heard a bunch of shuffling around int heir room and when I asked what was going on, they decided to trade rooms. Apparently they wanted more of a change. So they were busy relocating all their stuffed animals and prized loveys. I think this was a game designed to drive me crazy. Needless to say, after a discussion on taking care of our belongings and not driving mommy crazy, they slowly spent parts of the rest of the day moving belongings back to their original home. Gotta love the movers! I think they were just caught up in the fun.

Summer Love Sewing

I love old sheets. I love this wrap dress pattern that I made. I love bias tape on little girls clothes. I love the big sister dresses. What is not to love here. Well, did I mention how much I love the girls that these dresses were for?

I was not sure if I would get these done in time for the send off for Hazel, Greta & Alice. But a few late nights and I was able to send them off. They are my favorite family friends who recently moved to Pennsylvania. Alice and Ella were in kindergarten together and best friends. Greta and Lars were born one month apart and really were buddies. It was sad to see them hug each other good bye. They were each other's first friend. They always were paired together and they really did not complain. Greta called him "Larsie Boy" as we all did, but it most certainly was sweeter from her. Lars called her "My Greta" as if she was his only friend in the world. We miss her stories and creative mind. She never fails to make people laugh and be entertained. She really has a flair for the melodrama- something Lars does as well. It has been amazing to see these two develop and to see how different they are but yet how similar.

So my post on sewing is dedicated to dear sweet Greta! Funny how that happened. Miss you much!

Swimming Extravaganza

I can't remember the last time I have been swimming this much. Let me recap my week.

Monday- birthday party at City Park

Tuesday- Kent Park

Wednesday- indoor swimming at Canteburry Inn or as the kids like to call it- "The Castle"

Thursday- break

Friday- Kent Park

Saturday- Elks Club

So we did not visit North Liberty, Coralville or the pool in Williamsburg. We may have to try that this week. Although it looks like rain today so I may schedule these for another day this week. We also may go to the Dubuqe water park this weekend.

Long Distance Garage Sale

I have heard of long distance phone calls and long distance relationships but have you heard of long distance garage sales? Well, I think Nora and I just invented this terminology. I jokingly tell Nora that she will never be out of my life, but it seriously is difficult knowing when I walk by a pair of Primigi shoes I just can't run them across the street to her. I will need to develop new habits!

I knew this garage sale might have possibility. I was excited when she was open to people coming early- as in the day before she was planning. I am not normally one to swoop in before time but you know it never hurts to ask. From the moment I walked in, I gasped as my eyes spotted an Oilily 2 piece outfit and a Indygo and it seemed as if Hanna Anderssen goods were everywhere. This IS my element. I instantly went into search and scan mode. Find beautiful pieces and place into pile- check sizes later. Another Oilily....ahh. Then I was distracted by the table of Hanna jammies for $1 a set. I wanted someone near me so I could scream into their ear.

Instead I set my pile down and calmly called Nora. I knew my phone did not have a lot of battery left but I hoped it had enough to call her. As I was checking sizing, nothing would fit Ella. (insert sad music) But it all would fit Greta and then eventually Hazel. So I needed to check with Nora to see if she was interested. The prices were too good to not get them and ship them to Pennsylvania! I think the jammies alone were worth the price of shipping! (cue happy music) I chatted with Nora and she seemed to think it all sounded great! ONce I got home, I took pictures for her and emailed them to her. She told me that she enjoyed this moment! I think not having her here to experience this with is tough for both of us. Garage sales and bargain shopping was a true bonding experience. But through the lovely iPhone, we can connect even though we are hundred of miles away. Below are many of the items I purchased. Can you hear my excitement? You should have heard Nora's!

Six going on Sixteen.

Really- why does my dear, sweet, loving, little daughter have an attitude that makes me sometimes want to send her across the room? I wish I were kidding. She was in tears today, her birthday because Mommy (ME) yelled at her on her birthday. She thought that since it was her birthday, that she could not, should not get in trouble, for anything! I guess I remember that statute from when I was little, but at least it was in my head. I stood my ground and insisted on respect and nice treatment of others all day, including her brother.

Lars was the point of contention today. She actually argued with me this morning about how she did not want to be nice to him. She agreed to be nice to everyone else but she chose to stand her ground on this point (Lars) - wanting to be able to hit or kick her brother whenever she feels like it. Argh.

We did work through this, then on with the birthday experience. Her day began with heart shaped pancakes by her daddy. Then when her brother woke up he brought her present to her. She loved the hamster and gerbils Little Pet Shop. Awwww. Then we were on to run a few errands and went to see Jess. There Ella received more LPS- a whole container of pets and a circus! Seriously more than any child needs in a lifetime.

Then we were onto lunch at the Hilltop with Daddy. Ella and Lars played with the pool balls and watched Daddy play video games at our favorite local bar. The lunch was surprisingly good! I recommend giving it ago. The choclate chip cookies following the lunch (2 for a dollar) are always a huge hit!

Next we went to gather up our pool stuff to go swimming at City Pool. Lars was an absolute fish and doggy paddling underwater with his daddy. Ella's friends came and Natalie, Chloe and Morgan all had a great time playing and splashing Daddy. I wish I had pictures of the four girls as the jumped into the pool in unison. They really were just adorable and having so much fun together. Then the rain came. After about 1 1/2 hours the sprinkles turned to a downpour. My plan was to head to a nearby shelter, but the girls looked at me like I was crazy. I began to agree with them as the rain showed no sign of sying off. So we decided to take the party to our house where we could actually dry off. We headed back and Vonn and his mother joined us. The kids played some more and we ate pizza and sang and had Yummy's cupcakes. Ella was exhausted by the end and I think it was a day of fun! The rain added to our excitement and craziness but we all dried off and the kids screamed and enjoyed the running and fun of it all!

Boutique Garage Sale 2010

I declare this a fancy garage sale since we have a regular garage sale area plus a boutique room- where we will have all of our boutique name brand items:

What a Girl Needs (Part 2) Shameful Post...

So...this is a totally sheepish post here. I think my prior list is a solid list. Now that I have looked through my closets I realize I currently have about double the amount that is on my list. I have been so dutiful about buying ahead that I now realize I have plenty of all items. I think all Ella needs is a pair of sandals and perhaps some kind of swimsuit coverup.

My challenge was going to be outfitting the kids by garage sale shopping only. I need time to think about this because technically I all ready have this list fulfilled. I will have to think of a new challenge this summer. Perhaps I need to challenge myself to NO clothes shopping until school. I think I can find many more meaningful things to do. Perhaps I need to replace it with sewing! Or possibly more working out. Now what to refocus all my energy into.....

How Many Clothes Do They Really Need?

Just how many clothes do you think your kids need? Well, I certainly KNOW my kids have more than their share and do not wear all they have. In the need to simplify I have been copying others peoples ideas of what is an appropriate amount. See what they think.

MOM #1

Toddlers and Pre-schoolers

9-10 everyday outfits
3-4 dressy church outfits
3-4 casual dressy outfits
4-5 pajamas
2 pairs play shoes
1 pair dress shoes
1 pair casual nice shoes (optional)

School Age
(including teen boys, if your teens complain about the clothes, make them responsible for them, including paying for the extras that they want.)

3-4 pairs of jeans or school pants
7-9 school shirts
1-2 pairs dress pants
3-4 dress shirts
1-2 casual dressy outfits
2-3 pajamas
1 pair school shoes
1 pair causal shoes or 1 pair of shoes for dirty work
1 pair dress shoes

MOM #2

10 pairs of underwear: This keeps parents from having to run a last minute Sunday night wash. Always pack an extra pair in younger children's backpacks for emergencies.

10 pairs of socks: Boys can usually get away with 10 identical pairs, but girls may want them in different colors. Always buy at least 5 pairs in white, and at least 2 pairs in each additional color. This way, if your child loses one sock, there is always another matching set. The third sock can replace another lost sock, or one with a hole.

5 bras or undershirts: If your daughter is wearing a bra or undershirt, it's best to buy one for each day of the week. Kids sweat, and sweat on top of existing sweat can create very unpleasant odors and a bacterial growth which can lead to an infection. Always remind them to wear a clean bra or undershirt. Undershirts are a great idea for boys in the winter months to keep their chest warm under a long sleeve tee shirt or sweater.

3-5 pairs of jeans: Jeans come in many different washes and cuts. I prefer adjustable waist or elastic for younger children to avoid the hassle of a belt. Keep a nicer pair of jeans set aside for the weekends and special occasions (school pictures, etc.)

5 pairs of shorts: In Florida, kids can wear shorts 10 months out of the year. Denim and khaki shorts are the most versatile. Soft cotton or basketball shorts are great for days when they have physical education and will keep them cool while running laps.

10+ tops: Tee shirts, polo shirts, button downs, blouses, etc.

2-3 pairs of shoes: A dark pair and a light pair of sneakers are usually all that boys will need. Girls need a pair of sneakers, and a pair or two of rubber-soled shoes, like mary-janes or loafers that can be worn with socks. If you know your child's correct shoe size, you can try sites such as www.endless.com or www.amazon.com to find great deals on brand-name back to school footwear.

3-5 sweaters/sweatshirts: These are great for layering or wearing alone.

2 pairs of sweatpants: Great for cold or windy days or on physical education days.

1 winter coat: There is always a day or two where this is a must--even in Florida!

1 windbreaker/waterproof jacket/raincoat: There are many cool and rainy mornings, and one of these jackets will keep children warm and dry.

1 winter hat, 1 pair of gloves, 1 scarf: For the few really cold morning, especially if your child has to wait at the bus stop.

1 purse-size umbrella: Kids can keep these in a small pocket in their backpack.

1 new backpack, 1 new lunch box: Every child likes to have a new set at the beginning of the year!

1 new toothbrush, 1 new deodorant and a nice haircut: These are things that can help kids feel clean and fresh when starting the new school year!

Tips:
Spend an afternoon while the kids are at camp or grandma's house visiting stores like Target, Walmart, JCPenney, Belk, Marshall's, Ross, and Kohl's with your list in hand. Write down the best prices you see for the items on your list. Decide where you are going to purchase each item before heading out with the kids.
Once you have an idea of what the items will cost, set a budget and stick to it.
If you see something your child can use on clearance, pick it up. You can always return it later, but it may not be there when you get back.
Let your child choose from a preselected number of items. That way they feel as though they have a choice, but will stay within your budget.
Don't feel as though you have to buy everything in one shot. Keep the list in your purse or wallet, and whenever you pick up a new piece you can mark it off.
Clean out the kids' closets before bringing anything home. Make some extra cash for new clothes consigning the items they've outgrown or give them away to a charity.
Big ticket, or rarely used items (coats, scarves, etc) can and should be used for as long as they fit. However, replacing socks, under garments, and tees every school year (even if the older ones still fit) is a relatively inexpensive way for your child to feel refreshed and motivated to start a new school year.
Keep all of the tags on the items until they are worn and keep all of the receipts. I always check the clearance aisles in the weeks following my purchases. Anything that has been marked down can be price adjusted, or returned and repurchased at the less expensive price.
I always buy a couple of extra backpacks and lunch boxes when they are marked down to 75% - 90% off at Target. They cost me about $4 and make great mid-year replacements. They also make good donations to Metropolitan Ministries Backpacks of Hope.

Where Has Jen Been?

I have been busy. I have been trying to find more space in my life for family. Blogs and computer screen time seem to eat away at that like a disease. So simplification apparently is the goal for 2010.

There is, of course, a lot else in way of change happening here but I think I am going to focus my blog this year on my frugalistic ways and only focus on dealing with 2 kids on a budget. Of course some of their cuteness may sneak their way onto the blog but I will let you know more about my challenge (COMING SOON!) and ways I decide to keep things simple.

Expect fewer posts, that focus on my challenge for the year. I think this will be fun and take a little less of my time and energy! Enjoy- I know I will have fun.

Christmas Ideas

I just love this idea! I think it would be a great keepsake of my little ones. I will need to practice my sad embroidery skills. Perhaps a class at Home Ec. is in order? I also saw one mama (on Soule-Mama) use her childrens' drawings to make pillows. Who knows which on I will do but I certainly have a plethora of artwork to choose from!

This adorableness is from craft pudding on Etsy. They also have a great book stamp that you can personalize. How much fun is this?

One of my other favorite ideas is Table Talk for families. I have been wanting to get these for a while now - for my kids at home and for students at school. I am wondering how easy this will be to make and give to friends and family? I think I could make it fun and cute!

Onward Hawks!

This year would be remiss if I did not mention the almighty Hawkeye football team. Lars was able to go to a game earlier this year with his daddy! This year has not been pretty but it has been full of great exciting football games that have kept the fans on the edges of their seats. I was lucky enough to go into Kinnick for the Northwestern game, much to my dismay, they lost. This ended the undefeated season- so they are currently 9-1, which is pretty darn good for us! There are still chants of Rose Bowl ging around but we face Ohio this weekend. I wish the boys luck and I am proud most of all of the players- they are a respectable bunch of students and of Ferents, the coach, who really is the strength behind the group! Go Hawks!

Foolproof Outfit

Great idea here to think of an outfit that can take me through my entire day with no item changes. It has to be stylish but yet fit and allow for the mobility to chase a 3 year old Lars. I have a limitation of not being able to wear jeans since jeans are a no no at my school. (So sad but true!) So here is my idea of a perfect outfit....Since I cannot afford to really shop virtual shopping it is!

I think all the items are classic and very versatile. I really do want a ruffled shirt- but I am looking for one in chambray. I liked this one though. I also shopped at one store- GAP. I will need to do another foolproof outfit from another favorite store.

Into the Woods

Perhaps next week the witch, aka mom, needs to get ready to appear in some pictures. These are pretty cute though! I am glad my kids have allowed me one more year for them to dress like kids. Lars was complaining that he did not think Hansel was cool (after one kid from his school said that he was going to be Scooby Doo) so I had to explain how Hansel was cool, as Bret snickered from the other room. Now, I know that Hansel may not be cool, but seriously- how cute is he?

Someone I was listening to or reading mentioned how they wish kids woudl only dress up as inanimate objects or story book characters. I love this idea, but pop culture takes hold of this young impressionable group especially at the time of Halloween. Add animals to the list of allowable costumes too! How is a parent to win?

I think this is putting my sewing to shame. I also dig the photo shoot. I have been working on Hansel and Gretel costumes for my kids for this Halloween but my sewing pales compared to this ensemble. I may need to wisk my Hansel and Gretel away to the woods with me as a witch to get some fantastic shots like this.

Kitchen Finals...for now

This is the desk I posted many different carts to replace. Bret wonders if we changed the top and handles, and possibly new legs if then we would not hate it as much. I think I woudl still hate it. It stands for old ugly kitchen. I want a new nice counter area!

What do you think of these chairs? Our others have served us well- but after many years of love and use they may need to put out to pasture. I love these modern clean looking chairs. I also like the version in a light wood.

Now I will need to start work on our holiday surpise of hanging up some very special artwork for the walls to complete this transformation. Oh and I am reminded of the sad neglected apartment int he basement where I will need to paint and hang blinds too. How come I always want to do my stuff first?

Green Baby!

Boy... it sure is green. Bright bright green. I do think the yellow table really pops and the blue in the floor seems to be brighter too. I plan on using all white or stainless accessories too. Once i have the second coat up, I plan on hanging up cafe curtains in the back window and on the window above the sink. All then I need is the cart from IKEA to go where the desk is.

I have been eyeing these too.

I still am not sure which one will be best. But all I know is I cannot wait to get rid of the horrid desk that is in there right now and have a more functional item in its place. Then onto the wall accessorites! Bret and I have quite the non-traditional surprise in store here. I am hoping we can have a small holiday party as I am hoping we are done with everything by then. Let's hope!

Slow Parent Ahead

I just read another article on the "Slow Parenting" movement. Interesting stuff. It almost seems like people are being told through these kind of articles that they have to choose a side as to which kind of parent they want to be. Instead, I prefer the approach that you just need to be with your kids and offer them the most you can on whatever terms you feel is right to help your child develop into the person they want to be. I am certain this can be done regardless of what classes you sign your kids up for. I long to have the privilege of time with my family that is safe, fun, relaxing and just mine. No pressure - not always an agenda other than we just want to do this.

I have also heard this idea called "lazy parenting" which, of course, I do not like. I see my actions for NOT doing the many things as very purposeful which in reality is not laziness but rather wanting to be and live in the moment. I do have the worry about working and missing many moments but I think if you use this approach you can strive for the balance and connection we all need within our lives.

That being said, I have long since gotten over the fact that I don't have my kids signed up for any lessons this fall and I am not sure there will be any this spring. This past summer we did swimming but that was the only planned activity we did. We enjoyed the wonders of Kent Park, pools,the library, the backyard, parks and playing with friends.

I plan on continuing sharing my ideas and really being lazy thus enjoying my kids and family and allowing life to take me where it chooses.

Apple Picking 2009

We enjoyed our trip this year to TJ's orchard. The kids love the freedom of running around and picking as many apples and pears as we can. I have all ready made 2 apple crisps and have more coming! I do wish we were closer to Grandpa Jerry's as we could to pick from his trees too! Fall is my favorite time of year and it has definitely arrived. Welcome!

Lemonade and Leaves

Ella and Alice were playing together on a beautiful Labor Day. What else to do but have a lemonade stand. I was itching to go shopping but instead, I got them the lemonade and cups and got my book ready. I read from the porch and watched them from afar as they were excited and bored with their real lemonade stand. This was worth staying at home and literally doing nothing but watching our girls have fun.

My guess is they had two neighbors (thanks Jo and Don), two sets of bikers and two cars that pulled up and ordered lemonade. Everytime someone came they squealed with excitement and were so giddy they almost forgot what to do. I stood my ground on the porch and laughed heartily as their first customer had to help them pour as the container was a bit too heavy for them to handle ontheir own. When they were bored they decorated their stand (a box) with more decorations.

If you look closely at the signs one says "Lemonaid" (I can never remember how to spell it) and the other was "Flowers". The only problem was we did not have lots of flowers to choose from, so Ella decided to sell pretty leaves instead for a penny a piece. Sadly there were no takers for the leaves. I did have to hold my laughter when a set of bikers approached and Ella proudly told them we had lemonade for a quarter and leaves for a penny. She very seriously said she would take the lemonade. I was having a hard time keeping a straight face!

Kitchen Progress

All the wallpaper is gone! Hooray!

And above are the two new light fixtures. I have one my handyman (Mark) is helping to hang on arm. But overall they help bring my kitchen out of the fifties.

Unfortunately, they are selling it way too high and no one has realized that smokey mirrored glass, food on the walls, dirty carpets, and plastic flowers are NOT selling features anyone wants to look at these days.

Now I just need to prep the walls then it is onto choosing a color. I think green is a high contender but blue has been recommended. I think it may just depend. We will see!

Mr. Shucks Rocks

Mr. Shucks, the CR Kernels mascot is truly a sight to behold. The kids are finally old enought and are not too scared of him so we got this great shot!

Only at the Kernels can both your kids leave with a ball and a free spaghetti dinner from Zio Johnnos! Ella was so excited that she finally won a trophy!

We even were luck enough to get a free ice cream and had more than enough for 7 people. This one looks as large as Lars' head! It wasn;t quite that large but still it was big!

ACT 2009 Picnic

Hands down the ACT picnic is one of the best for families! Lars was a daredevil and decided to ride on the Pirates Revenge and the squeaky train. We enjoyed the company of friends and ate lots of food. Bret was disappointed they ran out of ice cream bars (again! 2 years running). They celebrated their 50 years in business with a fireworks display that the kids loved. We all went home tired and full. A good night by all!

Letter to my Little Girl

Ella,

These are the best times. Your innocent times. Time to live. Time to grow. To take the time to enjoy the sights and sounds of life. To be fascinated by the world around you. A time of few worries and few judgements. A time when you are able to find some good in everyone and everything around you. Hopefully you take your love of others, love of self and love for life with you forever.

Your spirit is awesome. I am in awe of you. You choose to be you, not concerned of what others think. Always wanting to experience the new, not afraid of the challenges that have been placed before you. I was so honored to walk with you today on your first day of school. You gave me strength during that walk. All of my doubts and fears washed away by your confidence. Oh what confidence! Soon that confidence will take you on to big things and ultimately away from me. Hopefully you will cherish these days and remember the times like this morning when you have moved on, or are feeling down, or think that I am the worst person in the world, which you will.

You were named for two very strong women, I see that strength in you today. I hope you forever remember that I will always be there for you, to fight for you, to support you, to hug you, to love you. You are a blessing. You are a joy. Set your sights high and then blow them out of the water. Most importantly, be you and hold on to this spirit that you have been blessed with forever!

One day, if you choose to get married, I hope that I will get the honor to take you on another big walk. And hopefully you will once again give me the strength that you gave me today. City Park

I live super close to this amazing park. I am pretty sure we could walk here...but oh the hill...so we don't. Perhaps next summer! But for the number of times we drive by this place, we rarely stop. My friend, Miriam, called me to go to City Park to check out shelters and then go on the rides. I almost fell over when I got a punch card for 10 rides for $6! Super cheap and you can do a few then come back another day. The people running the rides were super nice too. Nothing scared me too much and the kids love it. I am sure to go back. THis to me seems like a real memory maker for the kids- or at least me!

One Week Left..boo hoo!

Such a sad sad post but one that happens every year. Right now I am having my coffee and watching cartoons with my kiddos. This is one of the luxuries I will not have after this week. Weekends only. Now don't get me wrong, but I love the time of year where I go back to school. I am also excited for the learning that is going to (hopefully) take place with my children. It still seems like a magical process- how do they remember and learn what they do!! Amazing!

This year more than others I will miss my children in a different way this year. Before I felt I was going to miss some developmental milestone or cute actions, but now I really love them for WHO they are and their personalitlies. It has been a blessing this summer to see Bret and have breakfast and lunch together as a family. This has made these times special every day which I will miss greatly. I think my goal of spending this summer with my kids rather than carting them around everywhere has been a great one. I have loved my time with friends to connect and play. I am excited for school to begin- yes I have accepted it- but I loved this summer!!

The 3/50 Project encourages people to shop locally. When we shop locally, the money we spend stays in our community. For every $100 we spend locally, $68 is returned to the community.

When we spend in a national chain, only $43 remains in the community. And, of course, when we buy online, nothing stays home.

So pick 3 businesses you would miss if they went out of business. Spend $50. Save our local economy.

Here are my 3:
If you know me you know I steer clear of Walmart. I understand it is cheaper- but I think I can work on saving in differnt ways as it is better for my community if I do not shop there. I will go there if I have to..but it pains me when I do. I am slightly addicted to Target but I am working in that. This summer I have been finding my local Ace- (just a few minutes from my house- I can actually walk there!) - often helps me find what I need with great service. They have so much more than just hardware. I often will run there when I am in need of something unique and useful.

I think I could also recommend Stuff- or any local consignment. : ) You are actually buying used goods, it really is recycling at its finest. What a green and economical concept. Stuff has made consignment cool in this town. Revival, Second Act, Kidsworks...it's all so good! So it is a shoppers market! Yea for me!

Last I would choose a local restaurant or local bakery. The Breadmarket has made us really want to go downtown more. In fact Bret and I are pretty much in love with most things Mondinaro-not the man but his creations are pretty tasty- Givannis (my fav!), Mickeys (has that sold yet?), Sports Cafe (yeah its back!) and Hothouse Yoga too.

Napkins

I know napkins are not very exciting, but I recently finished a stack for my friend Kim and I have made quite a few for myself. The kids are really good at reaching for these re-usable napkins and since I wash my towels every other day, keeping enough clean has not been an issue. I do think when I get my serger back I will need to do another load for me. I am getting it cleaned and adjusted as some of the pieces are a little loose and need fixing. Kim's stacks are from fabric selected by her own kiddos. Lots of pink and dogs and cats if I do remember right! They turned out so cute. Her mission is to have a waste-free lunch. Her and Nora also found these adorable re-usuable lunch snack and sandwhich bags which are lined and completely washable. They are a lot like these. I think a waste-free lunch is a great idea...now if we can get the schools on board!

Pardon the Mess

I apologize for the mess pictured here, as I have been scraping wallpaper off the walls all week. Still looking for a new paint color idea...I like Pear from Benjamin Moore. Bright greens seem to be working for me right now. There is a lot of prep work ahead so lots of time to decide.

But there is some hope with the new hardware on the cupboards. I also have one light fixture installed due to Mr. Mark (thanks!) and I hope to try installing the other sometime this week. More updates to come later this week!

Kernels Baseball

Last Tuesday was our first Kernels game of the year. Twice we were not able to go due to naps or other things popping up. I was really impressed with Lars and Ella doing much better at this game than in past times we have gone and all I seem to do is walk around with them. We actually were able to enjoy ourselves. I think the kids had fun too! The Kernels staff do such a great job of entertaining everyone. Our seats were great and we even had a free ticket thanks to our Kraft cheese wrapper!

Lars was very respectful during the anthem!

The eyeball race is one of the oddest looking races. It is quite entertaining for the kids but not quite as much fun as the racing sausages at Milwaukee. I am pretty sure red won!

This is the tooth fairy- Ella went crazy for her! She really thought she was the real thing. It was cute - she brushed the bases clean after we sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and she skipped from base to base.

Lars' Barn

I was cruising through Goodwill the other day and I landed upon this barn- it was taken apart and in the box with the other two small boxes which were chock full of accessories. This is an older barn and as you can see it swings open. THis was an amazing deal - only $10.38- gotta love Goodwills crazy eight prices! I would guestimate the whole lot was over $100 new. There are a few issues with the house but for ten bucks I am never going to complain! LArs thinks it is just great and so do I!

Ella has a dollhouse by the same company, Plan Toys, and she is slowly accruing furniture to fill it. She is becoming the right age as now as she often will close the door to her room to play with her dollhouse without her little brother tagging along. He would get so sad and teary because he wanted to play too. Well, now he goes to his room to play with his barn. In fact, the two of then often go between their two rooms and play with both items !

Bargain Alert!

This summer has really been a bonanza of bargains! I love garage sales- there have been some great ones this summer. I really scored the other week with Kim and I found item after item for Mr. Lars. It really suprises me how much he has grown and lengthened out. So much of his 3T stuff seems so small and too short in shirts and pants. If he wasn't so skinny I would not have so many problems!

I was very excited for the half price sales at Stuff Etc. but since I regularly find things marked down that has taken some of the fun out of it. Still found new Hanna unders for Lars and a Mini Boden shirt for him too! I was in heaven when I discovered an orange pair of Keen tennies and a pair of Simple lace up high tops. He has a good assortment of shoes for his oh so skinny yet long feet.

The best fun was with Nora and Kim last weekend- my soul shopping sisters! We hit Second Act's fall opening and I shockingly only got two items for Ella and one shirt for Lars- all the rest was for me! This is indeed unusual but long overdue. I can't wait to go through my closet and throw out stuff that I do not wear. I found a great pair of sandals, several shirts and a great teal coat. Nora found me a great lavender or periwinkle skirt there a few weeks back. Oh I can't forget the shoes Nora found for me at Goodwill- these truely are the most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever tried on for heels. She got them for $12ish and online or at VonMauer they run $150 or more. Not exactly the kind of shoes I wear in the summer but for school - I can't wait! So for back to school shopping, I should be set with the kids (except possibly a coat for Ella- fall kind??)

I have completely decided I am in love with most all kids stuff Mini Boden- so any Stuff readers out there I would love Boden alerts anything in sizes 4 and up for boys and 6 and up in girls. I will purchase larger sizes too.

Red Rocks

Bret and I were treated to a glorious three (yes! three) hour Wilco Concert at one of the loveliest venues I have ever seen. We both agreed living in Denver would be great becasue you would be in such close proximity to this wonderous place. It really seems like everyone wants to play there too- so you would have unlimited concert options. What a joy that would be! We will be there in soul when Phish returns to play at the end of this month for four nights! We are pretty sure it will be Phishville there. I hope phans are respectful of this great site!

When we were returning from the mountains we decided to stop for a restroom break and to walk around a little so the kids could see all the beauty. It really is a different environment than any other part of Colorado. What a state! We loved driving around and seeing all the lots. Who knew there was a cute little red rock tunnel to the top lot! We do now!

Lars was still suffering from his altitude sickness so he did not really want to walk all around so he took several breaks which allowed me some great photo ops!

Happy Fourth of July 2009

We packed a lot more into this day than I thought was possible! Here are some highlights from our evening at Invesco Stadium-aka Mile High Stadium. We saw the Outlaws, Denver's professional lacrosse team play here then we watched fireworks in the stadium following the game! It was a friendly fun evening for our family, but all head were happy to go back to the hotel to sleep!

Chocolate Block

I just returned from a chocolate discount store called Chocolate Block and I walked away with3 pounds of candy, chocolate covered coffee beans, and a candy bar for $15. For great yummy tasting delectables this made me astonished how cheap it was!

They have second runs from Bochner chocolate and one of the candy bars I got had the words Choxie on it...I think that is Target's brand. New flavors everyday and they are running a 20% sale this week!

Run do not walk to Pepperwood Plaza (behind K-Mart on Hwy 6) and visit this new business and satisfy your inner chocolate monster!

Matilda Jane

Since I have been posting about other people's cute stuff, I can do one more! I do think I forsee me making some of my own versions of this stuff! BY far some of the cutest clothes I have seen in some time! Matilda Jane is the name of the clothing line. I think I love it because it reminds me of Oilily a bit or Cakewalk with all the mixing and matching.

I do so heart apron dresses and the combo with the pants with ruffles on the bottom. I will need to start thinking of how my creations will come to be...perhaps that shirt I was going to make into mommy daighter aprons might be best for a project much like this....

Seriously, this is a designer after my own heart! Amazingly she also makes reversible skirts...and she loves Michael Miller fabrics. I think she is my sewing twin! She will be designing and selling these skirts with reversible shirts - which I love too.

But the socks....I think I have seriously overdone tights as Ella has more than 20 pairs...I love love love these socks. How cute would she be going off to kindergarten in these?
